Why Is My Raven ZZ’s New Growth Green?

New green leaves are normal. Changes to older leaves need a different check.

Quick questions

Is green new growth a problem?

Not by itself. Raven ZZ foliage starts green before darkening. Check firmness and overall plant health as well as colour.

How long does it take to turn black?

There is no single reliable deadline for every plant and leaf. Follow the gradual change rather than treating a particular week as a pass or fail.

Should I cut off the green shoot?

No, not if it is healthy. Removing it takes away normal new growth rather than solving a problem.

Will more fertiliser make it darker?

Do not add extra feed for colour. Follow the normal care routine; excess fertiliser can damage roots.

What if an old dark leaf is turning yellow?

That is a different change. Check the pot’s moisture, drainage and other symptoms before deciding what to do.

Could I have bought a green ZZ instead?

Possibly, but a green new shoot does not prove that. Check the label and mature foliage, then ask the seller if the identity is uncertain.

Fresh green growth is normal on a Raven ZZ. Its new leaves emerge green, then develop the darker purple-black appearance as they mature. If the new shoot is firm and the rest of the plant looks well, colour alone is not a reason to change care.

First, identify which leaves changed

Look at the base of the shoot and compare it with older growth. Is this a new shoot that has always been green, or an older dark leaf that has become pale or yellow?

That distinction matters more than matching a colour in a photograph. A fresh green shoot and a deteriorating older leaf are not the same problem.

Give healthy new growth time

There is no useful deadline that every leaf must meet. Take a photograph in the same lighting occasionally if you want to compare changes without relying on memory.

Do not add extra feed or water to speed the colour change, and do not move the plant into strong sun to force it darker. Keep bright indirect light and continue checking the pot before watering. The full Raven ZZ care guide covers that routine.

Check yellowing or soft growth separately

If the shoot becomes soft, collapses or develops spreading damage, investigate rather than assuming it is just changing colour. Check moisture below the surface, drainage and recent changes in position or care.

Older leaves turning yellow also deserve a separate check. Wet roots, prolonged dryness and other stresses can produce overlapping symptoms. Our overwatering versus underwatering guide helps you work through the evidence before treating the plant.

If the whole plant stays green

A plant with only new foliage may need time before its mature colour is clear. If established older foliage is also green, check the nursery label and ask the seller to confirm the cultivar. Green ZZ plants are sold too.

Avoid diagnosing a mix-up from one newly unfurled leaf. Keep a note of what you bought and compare the same shoot as it matures.
