Quick questions

Is Brasil a separate Philodendron species?

No. It is a variegated cultivar of Philodendron hederaceum.

Can it climb?

Yes. Give stems a support, or let them trail.

Why are new leaves less variegated?

Check light and the whole vine; the pattern also varies naturally leaf by leaf.

Can I grow it from one leaf?

A stem cutting needs a node to produce a new vine.

Is Brasil pet-safe?

No. Philodendron foliage contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.

'Brasil' is a colourful form of heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum). Yellow-green markings run through its heart-shaped leaves, but the pattern can vary from one leaf to the next. Let stems trail from a shelf or climb a support.

Light for colour

Give bright indirect light. It tolerates lower light than some variegated vines, but growth may thin and new leaves may lose contrast. Avoid moving a shade-grown plant straight into harsh sun.

Check the pot

Use a draining pot and an airy mix that holds some moisture. Water when the upper layer begins to dry and let excess escape. Reduce checks when winter growth slows; do not keep a small pot constantly wet just to preserve variegation.

Shape and propagate

Trim long vines above a node to encourage branching. A cutting needs a node to root; a leaf alone will not become a new vine. Watch for mealybugs, mites and scale on stems and leaf undersides.

Pets

This is a philodendron, with calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth if eaten. Keep it out of reach and ask a veterinarian if a pet chews it.
